Overview
The Malta Digitial Innovation Authority (‘MDIA’) is the main regulatory force in the blockchain and innovative technology space. The MDIA was established in 2018 as part of the country’s rise to prominence as a leading blockchain jurisdiction intent on promoting the scalability of distributed ledger technology whilst ensuring a sufficient degree of investor protection and regulatory oversight.
The main purpose of the MDIA is to support the development and implementation of the innovative technology sector in Malta through the proper recognition and regulation of ‘innovative technology arrangements‘.
A part of Malta’s cutting-edge trident of blockchain laws, the MDIA Act, the Virtual Financial Assets Act (‘VFA Act’), and the Innovative Technology Arrangements & Services Act (‘ITAS Act‘) complement each other in the attainment of a comprehensive technology-neutral blockchain regulatory framework.
