Requirements

Preliminary Requirements

In order to provisionally register a yacht under the Malta flag, the following conditions must be satisfied:

  • a registration application must be submitted by the owner of the yacht or an authorised representative;
  • proof of qualification to own a Maltese yacht must be shown;
  • a resident agent must be appointed where the owner of the yacht it not resident in Malta;
  • submission of a copy of the yacht’s International Tonnage Certificate;
  • a declaration of ownership must made in front of the Registrar by the owner or an authorised representative;
  • an application must be made for Minimum Safe Manning Certificate in the case of commercial yachts exceeding 24 metres in length;
  • submission of an application for a ship radio station licence;
  • compliance with Commercial Yacht Code for operational certificate; and
  • payment of the initial registration fees and annual tonnage tax.

Additional Documents Required for Submission

During the 6-month provisional registration the applicant must submit the following documents, amongst others:

  • a bill of sale or any other document by which the vessel was transferred to the applicant for registry, in the case there was previous ownership. Otherwise, a builder’s certificate in the name of the applicant;
  • cancellation of registry certificate issued by the administration where the yacht was last documented, where applicable; and
  • in the event that the application involves a commercial yacht of over 500 gross tonnes, a copy of the last updated Continuous Synopsis Record issued by the administration where the yacht was last documented.
