Eligibility
All types of vessels are eligible for registration in the Malta Ship Register, from pleasure yachts to oil rigs and vessels which are under construction. As you will see, there are no trading or age restrictions however, specific conditions may be applicable.
Moreover, any Maltese or European citizen, including any company registered in Malta or in any other Member State of the European Union, may register vessels under the Maltese flag. If any party is not resident in Malta, a resident agent must be appointed.
On the other hand, a non-EU entity may register their vessel in the Maltese registry if such entity appoints a resident agent in Malta and the registrar is satisfied that the entity enjoys legal personality under its native jurisdiction. It is also possible for a non-EU citizen to register a vessel under the Maltese flag through the incorporation of a Maltese shipping company.
