Malta’s Aviation Register has reported strong and positive performance for 2015.
The sector has continued to achieve a steady growth, with a record of 61 aircraft registered in 2015. The same year also saw a total of 6 new operators being certified as well as a substantial increase in the number of pilot and engineer licences issued.
With a register totalling 213 aircraft and 28 operators, the Maltese aviation registry is clearly on a successful growth path.
This growth is sustained by fiscal incentives including a low corporate tax regime as well as rebate on profits.
This is complemented by specialised technical personnel who are readily available, flexible and accessible.Malta’s register includes a large number of commercial aircraft and business jets, two Airbus A340 and a Sukhoi Superjet 100, the latter being the first ever model of its type to be registered in the European Union.
Moreover, the presence of global names in the Maltese aircraft maintenance facilities industry provide the necessary assurance to potential investors that Malta is well geared for servicing this sector.
In fact the island offers an attractive package of incentives to local and foreign investors wishing to set up business in this jurisdiction.Malta’s growth in the aircraft maintenance industry is also witnessed by the fact that two leading global aircraft maintenance service providers established major maintenance facilities in Malta.
Lufthansa Technik Malta was founded in 2002 as a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik AG and Air Malta plc and today employs around 600 employees. It offers a wide range of aircraft maintenance, repairs and overhaul (MRO) services to a global customer list.
In 2010, Swiss firm SR Technics concluded an agreement to establish a similar facility in Malta. It now offers base and heavy maintenance for the Airbus A320 family and Boeing B737NG aircraft.
It employs around 150 employees, The strategically favourable location in the Mediterranean region of southern Europe, with its proximity to Africa and to the Arabian Peninsula, gives Lufthansa Technik Malta and SR Technics a unique edge over competitors.
